Men’s lacrosse rolls by Hendrix for fifth win of the season

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon men's lacrosse team defeated Hendrix College 9-3 on Saturday, picking up its fifth win of the season.

Huntingdon's offense started off fast, scoring four goals in the opening quarter while the defense held the Warriors scoreless in the first.

Freshman Austen Saucier opened the game with an unassisted goal, giving Huntingdon (5-1) an early 1-0 lead. Jakob Works tallied his first of three goals with an assist from Karson Hastings before adding his second goal with 4:48 remaining.

Mike George scored his only goal of the game 35 seconds later with an assist from Brandon Scheele.

Hendrix (0-3) scored its first goal 4:38 into the second quarter and cut the lead to two with a goal with 3:45 remaining in the half. The Hawks entered halftime leading 4-2.

Both teams were held scoreless for most of the third quarter until Scheele scored his 10th goal of the season with an assist from Jackson Schrampfer. Hastings found Works again with less than three minutes left in the quarter, giving the Hawks a 6-2 lead.

Mac Puller added his fourth goal of the season to give Huntingdon a five goal lead, 7-2, 1:58 into the fourth quarter.

Kendrick Ballard was able to slice through defense and found the back of the net to help the Hawks build their lead with 9:47 on the clock. Sam Hitt iced the game on ensuing faceoff, winning it to himself and sprinting down the field to score his first collegiate goal, giving Huntingdon a 9-2 lead with 9:40 left.

The Hawks allowed a goal with 3:53 remaining but held strong for the remainder of the game to take the win. Huntingdon improved to 4-1 all time against Hendrix.

Goalie Fabien Gutierrez was sensational in the cage for the Hawks. The senior goalie allowed three goals and recorded 14 saves, including five in the fourth quarter.

Defender Josh Clayton led the defense with four ground balls and had one caused turnover. Sam Hitt finished 8-for-16 at the faceoff x and scooped up three ground balls to go with his one goal.

Work's three goals gives him 25 for the season while Hastings pushed his assist total to 16.

Scheele finished with one goal and one assist. Ballard, George and Saucier each had one goal. Puller added a team-high five ground balls to go with his goal.

The Hawks return to Samford Stadium on Wednesday as they host in-state rival Birmingham-Southern at 6 p.m.
