Hawks earn ninth win of the season on Senior Day

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon men's lacrosse team honored eight seniors on Saturday for Senior Day before defeating Piedmont 6-4.

Huntingdon recognized Jackson Schrampfer, Dawson Jones, Josh Clayton, Caleb Dailey, Colton Edwards, Brandon Scheele, D.J. Horner and Karson Hastings.

With the win, Huntingdon improves to 9-7 overall and 2-1 in the Southeast Independent Lacrosse Championship. Piedmont falls to 5-8 and 1-2 in the SEILC.

Huntingdon's nine wins are the second most in a season in program history. The Hawks won 10 games in 2014.

In Saturday's game, the Hawks controlled most of the major statistical categories. Huntingdon outshot Piedmont 36-15, picked up 35 ground balls to Piedmont's 17 and won 11-of-14 faceoffs.

The Lions scored the first goal of the game with over nine minutes left in the opening quarter and carried a 1-0 lead into the second quarter.

The Hawks answered in the second quarter after Scheele picked up a loose ground ball on the crease and found a wide open Zach Barnhill for the equalizer with over 13 minutes left in the half. Neither team would score again in the half as the game was tied 1-1 heading into halftime.

Huntingdon took control of the game to start the third quarter and scored four goals in the first 6:30 of play. Austen Saucier scored his first of two goals before Scheele scored to give Huntingdon a 3-1 lead.

Saucier scored once more before Hastings found Mac Puller to put Huntingdon ahead 5-1. Piedmont scored three unanswered goals to pull within one score, but a penalty by the Lions would give Huntingdon a man advantage with 3:19 remaining.

Kendrick Ballard found Hastings with 2:58 left to play to put the Hawks in good position to close the game out. After a Piedmont turnover, the Lions committed two penalties with 1:23 remaining in the game. The Hawks held the ball for the remainder of the game to take the win.

Sam Hitt had a near perfect day at the faceoff x, winning 11-of-14 while collecting a game-high eight ground balls. Matt Murphy earned the win in cage and made six saves while allowing four goals.

A.J. Harper and Hastings scooped up four ground balls while Schrampfer had one assist.

Huntingdon will play at Greensboro on Saturday at 3 p.m. to close out the regular season.
