Hawks pick up first conference win of the season

CARY, N.C. – The Huntingdon men's soccer team scored two goals in the first seven minutes of the game and knocked off William Peace 5-0 in a conference game on Sunday.

Huntingdon (2-4-3, 1-0-1 USA South) put the game away with three second-half goals.

"I'm very happy for the boys. The result is great, but more importantly, I'm happy with how well we stuck to our game plan," Huntingdon head coach Matt Williams said. "With a 2-0 lead at the half, you can't get complacent because the game can change in an instant. It was important for us to finish the game off the way we did.

"I'm happy with the effort and the reactions from the players over the entire weekend. Now, we want to focus our attention on the next challenges in front of us."

The Hawks took control of the game quickly on Sunday. Freshman Killian Delmore scored an unassisted goal in the fifth minute of play, giving him two goals on the season. Bo Jenkins then scored in the sixth minute on an assist from Miguel Medina. It was Jenkins' second goal of the season.

In the second half, Rhett Williams made it 3-0 in the 54th minute before Elliot Webb scored on an assist from John Robert Lawrence in the 72nd minute. Jared Bodenbender closed the scoring on an assist from Sebastian Riveros Florez in the 82nd minute.

The Hawks and Pacers (3-5, 1-3 USA South) each took 15 shots for the game. Huntingdon keeper Alex Brown stopped all 10 of Peace's shots on goal for 10 saves in a little more than 74 minutes. Eathan Small played the final 16 minutes and did not face a shot on goal.

Brown, who was incorrectly credited in the stats with one save in Friday's win over Ferrum, finished the weekend with 19 saves. He leads the USA South with 81 saves in nine games this season and is second in the conference with an 84.4 save percentage.

Huntingdon returns to action at home on Oct. 4 against Maryville in a USA South matchup.
