Huntingdon men pick up first conference win

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon men's tennis team defeated Maryville 9-0 on Saturday.

The Hawks (3-6) earned their first USA South Athletic Conference win and improved to 1-1 in the conference. The Scots fell to 2-4 and 0-2 in conference play.

Huntingdon started the match by taking all three doubles matches. The No. 1 team of Justin McQueen and John Jones won 8-1 while Adam Self and Ryan Runager won 8-2 in the No. 2 spot.

Bailey Burns and Ben Marler cruised to an 8-0 win at No. 3 doubles.

In singles play, the Hawks won in straight sets in five of the six matches. Jones won by injury default at No. 1 singles.

McQueen won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2, Self (No. 3) won 6-2, 6-1, Burns (No. 4) won 6-2, 6-1, Marler (No. 5) won 6-1, 6-0 and Mark Melchor (No. 6) won 6-0, 6-0.

Huntingdon plays at conference rival Piedmont on Friday at 2 p.m. (Central).
