Huntingdon softball sweeps Maryville to improve to 13-0 in GSAC

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon softball team got off to a strong start in Game 1 and came from behind to win Game 2 in a 9-1 and 6-3 sweep of Maryville on Saturday.

Entering their final Great South Athletic Conference doubleheader on Monday, the Lady Hawks (23-10) are 13-0 in the GSAC.

In Saturday's first game, Huntingdon scored seven runs in the second inning to take control in a five-inning win. The Lady Hawks trailed 3-0 in Game 2 before scoring five runs in the fifth inning to take the lead.

Jenna Rimensnyder led Huntingdon at the plate, going 3-for-6 with a two-run home run, four RBIs and three runs in the doubleheader. In Game 1, Rimensnyder and Angela Barkman both hit two-run homers to help spark the seven-run second inning.

Leading 2-0 after Barkman's home run, a Morgan Goshorn double made it 3-0 before Goshorn scored on a Maryville error to make it a four-run game. Rimensnyder's home run made it 6-0 before a Lauren Welch single brought in the final run of the inning.

A Rimensnyder double and a Holly Ostrander single drove in the Lady Hawks' final two runs of the game in the third inning. Rimensnyder, Aleah Payne, Welch and Barkman each had two hits in the game.

Bree Giordana (12-6) struck out eight, gave up six hits and one earned run in five innings to get the win. Melissa McClure (10-4) pitched seven innings, striking out four, walking two, allowing six hits and three earned runs to get the second win.

Trailing 3-0 in the fifth inning of Game 2, Huntingdon used a two-run triple by Gabby Alcantar, an RBI single by Rimensnyder and a two-run double by Ostrander to take the lead. McClure added the final run in the sixth inning, scoring on an error.

Alcantar had two of Huntingdon's five hits in the second game.

Huntingdon hosts Piedmont (18-8, 11-1 GSAC) on Monday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
