Huntingdon softball sweeps Covenant on Senior Day

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon softball team remained unbeaten in conference play with a sweep of Covenant College on Tuesday. The Lady Hawks celebrated Senior Day with a pair of five-inning, 10-2 victories.

After a 0-6 start this season, Huntingdon (19-9, 12-0 Great South Athletic Conference) has won 19 of its last 22 games. Going back to last season, Huntingdon has won 16 straight conference games and 30 of its last 31 conference games.

On Tuesday, freshman Halleigh DiNicholas hit her third and fourth home runs of the season in the second game. DiNicholas hit a two-run homer in the first inning and another two-run homer in the fifth inning. She finished the day 4-for-5 with four RBIs and four runs.

Chasity Ward drove in three runs in the doubleheader, Brittany Richardson had three hits, three runs and a RBI and Jenna Rimensnyder had three hits, two runs and two RBIs.

Holly Ostrander had two RBIs in the first game and Lauren Welch scored three times. Jade Reynolds had a RBI and a run in the game, Kari Ranczka drove in one run and Gabby Alcantar and Melissa McClure each scored once.

Ashlee Zachmeyer had two hits and a run in the second game, Kaetlen Brown had two hits and a RBI and Justice Fuller, Ranczka and Reynolds each scored once in the second game.

In Game 1, Huntingdon scored eight runs in the first two innings and took advantage of five Covenant errors in the game. In the second game, the Lady Hawks scored four runs in the first inning and put the game away with five runs in the fifth inning.

McClure (11-3) earned the win in Game 1, striking out four, walking one and scattering six hits in five innings. Brooke Meadows (5-5) was the winner in Game 2, throwing a two-hitter, striking out five and walking three in five innings.

Huntingdon hosts Agnes Scott in a GSAC doubleheader on Wednesday, Game 1 is set for 1:30 p.m.
