Huntingdon softball opens season with two losses to No. 2 Spring Hill

MOBILE, Ala. – The Huntingdon softball team dropped two games to Spring Hill on Friday, but the Lady Hawks gave the No. 2 team in NAIA a battle.

Spring Hill edged Huntingdon 2-1 in nine innings in Game 1 and 4-0 in the second game.

In Game 1, junior Katy Messick carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning for Huntingdon and finished with two strikeouts, a walk and three hits allowed in six innings. Brooke Meadows took the loss in relief, striking out two and allowing two hits in 2 1/3 innings.

In extra innings, Huntingdon took a 1-0 lead in the top of the eighth when Meadows scored on a Spring Hill error. But the Badgers answered in the bottom of the eighth and scored the winning run on a single in the bottom of the ninth.

Daisha Henderson, Lauren Welch, Heather McGuirk and Jenna Rimensnyder accounted for the Lady Hawks' four hits in the game.

Spring Hill's Sarah Bolotte threw a no-hitter in Game 2. Anna Stephens took the loss for Huntingdon in the second game, striking out one, walking two and allowing five hits and two earned runs in four innings. Kaitlynn Wiggins pitched the final two innings, striking out one and allowing four hits and two earned runs.
