MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Junior Heather McGuirk was 6-for-6 with six RBIs and two runs to lead the Huntingdon softball team in a 4-3 and 9-1 sweep of William Peace on Saturday. The second game was shortened to five innings by the mercy rule.
The wins are Huntingdon's first as a member of the USA South Athletic Conference. The Lady Hawks (6-5, 2-0 USA South) continue conference play on Sunday with a doubleheader against Meredith. Game 1 is set for 1 p.m.
McGuirk was 3-for-3 with a run and drove in Jenna Rimensnyder for the winning run in the first win over Peace (4-8, 0-2 USA South). In Game 2, McGuirk was 3-for-3 with five RBIs and a run. She singled in the first inning to drive in one run, hit a three-run double in the second inning and had a RBI single in the third inning.
Holly Ostrander finished the day with four RBIs, including a three-run double in the first inning of Game 1. Rimensnyder scored two runs in the first game and Gabby Alcantar scored once.
Alcantar was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and three runs in Game 2 and Ashley Johnson was 2-for-2 with two runs in the final game. Kaitlynn Wiggins had one RBI in Game 2 and Ostrander, Caitlin Hudson and Amy Caroline Riley each scored once.
Brooke Meadows (3-2) picked up the first win, striking out six, walking five and allowing four hits and one earned run. Katy Messick (2-1) struck out five, gave up four hits and one earned run to pick up the win in Game 2.
