Lady Hawks earn second straight conference sweep

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon softball team took two games from Ferrum College on Monday to pick up its second conference sweep in as many days.

The Lady Hawks won 5-3 in Game 1 and 2-1 in Game 2. Huntingdon scored late in both games to get the sweep.

A two-run single by Tiffany Taylor put Huntingdon (7-9, 4-4 USA South) in front for good in the fifth inning of the first game. Daisha Henderson provided the spark in the second game. With Ferrum (12-4, 5-3 USA South) leading 1-0 in the sixth inning, Henderson drove in the tying run and scored the go-ahead run.

Katy Messick (4-4) picked up the win in Game 1, striking out five, walking one, scattering eight hits and allowing three runs in seven innings.

Heather McGuirk and Blake Rowland each had two hits in the game, with McGuirk scoring one run and Rowland driving in one run on a triple. Jesse Dunn had a triple, a RBI and a run and Ashley Johnson had one RBI. Lindsey Selph and Messick each scored once.

Selph (2-2) earned the win in Game 2, allowing four hits, four walks, one run and striking out three in seven innings.

Henderson finished 2-for-3 in Game 2. Johnson had Huntingdon's other hit and scored the tying run in the sixth.

Huntingdon returns to action at home on Tuesday with a doubleheader against Agnes Scott. Game 1 is set for 1 p.m.
