Softball splits pair of one-run games with Battling Bishops

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. – The Huntingdon softball team battled North Carolina Wesleyan in a pair of one-run games on Saturday.

The Lady Hawks came up short 4-3 in Game 1 and won the second game 3-2.

Trailing 2-0 in the fifth inning of Game 2, freshman Lindsey Selph hit a three-run home run to give Huntingdon the lead. The Lady Hawks shut down the Battling Bishops in the final three innings to get the win.

Senior pitcher Katy Messick held North Carolina Wesleyan to one hit and allowed just two base runners in the final three innings of Game 2. Messick (10-6) pitched a complete game, struck out four, walked two, allowed two runs and scattered nine hits.

For Selph, the home run was her seventh of the season. She is tied for third in the USA South in home runs and one home run short of the conference lead of eight. Tiffany Taylor and Messick each scored a run in the final game.

In Game 1, Huntingdon scored three runs in the third inning to take a 3-0 lead. North Carolina Wesleyan (15-15, 11-11 USA South) answered with two runs in the bottom of the third and two runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Jamie Langford had two hits and two RBIs and Gabby Alcantar had a RBI and a run. Heather McGuirk and Kala Rooney each scored one run. Raina Lanier (1-3) took the loss.

With one conference doubleheader remaining on Sunday, Huntingdon (17-14, 12-9 USA South) is sixth in the USA South standings. The Lady Hawks play at Methodist (18-18, 12-10 USA South) on Sunday at 9 a.m.
