Lady Hawks sweep Methodist in USA South doubleheader

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon softball team picked up two wins with a 4-2 and 3-1 sweep of Methodist University on Sunday.

The Lady Hawks (15-17, 9-7 USA South) took the lead early in each game and held off the Monarchs (6-26, 2-12 USA South). Pitchers Raina Lanier, Kerri Reed and Jessica Swindle combined to hold Methodist to eight hits and three runs in the two games.

Lanier (7-8) earned the win in Game 1, allowing four hits and one earned run in seven innings. Reed (3-7) started Game 2 and earned the win in 4 1/3 innings, allowing three hits and one run. Swindle closed out the game and picked up her second save of the weekend with three strikeouts, a walk and a hit in 2 2/3 innings.

In Game 1, Daisha Henderson, Chelsea Messer and Kala Rooney each had two hits. Jesse Dunn had two RBIs and Katrina Harden had one RBI. Henderson, Messer, Lindsey Selph and Brandi Blair each scored one run.

Huntingdon took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a two-run single by Dunn. Henderson and Messer each scored on errors in the third inning to make it a 4-1 game.

In Game 2, Selph had two hits and an RBI and was the only Lady Hawk with multiple hits. Huntingdon took a 3-0 lead in the first three innings.

Messer scored on a ground out by Swindle in the first inning. In the second inning, Messer drew a bases-loaded walk to score Reed and Felicia Peoples scored on an RBI single by Selph in the third inning.

Huntingdon returns to action with a doubleheader at Covenant on Saturday. Game 1 is set for noon.
