Huntingdon sweeps LaGrange in USA South doubleheader

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon softball team swept LaGrange College 6-2 and 3-2 in a conference doubleheader on Wednesday.

With the wins, the Lady Hawks (12-22, 11-7 USA South) climbed into a tie for third in the West Division of the USA South.

Pitchers Raina Lanier and Madison Hunt each earned complete-game wins. In Game 1, Lanier (4-11) struck out eight, walked three, allowed five hits and gave up two earned runs in seven innings. In Game 2, Hunt (6-3) struck out five, walked one, scattered seven hits and allowed two earned runs in seven innings.

Lanier leads the USA South with 84 strikeouts this season and is tied for third in the conference with 12 complete games.

Freshman Samara Miller led Huntingdon with four RBIs and a run on a 4-for-7 performance in the doubleheader. Miller was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run in the first game and 2-for-3 with three RBIs in the second game.

In Game 1, Huntingdon sent 11 batters to the plate and scored six runs in the sixth inning to take control. Trailing 2-0 with two outs, Brandi Blair scored on an error before Alex Teague's two-run single scored Jesse Dunn and Lanier to give Huntingdon a 3-2 lead.

After Teague scored on an RBI single by Miller to make it two-run game, Amber Wade scored on an error and Miller scored on a wild pitch to close the scoring.

In Game 2, the Lady Hawks took a 1-0 lead when Hunt scored on an RBI double by Miller in the third inning. LaGrange (7-19, 6-12 USA South) scored a run to tie the game in the fourth inning before a two-run double by Miller scored Dunn and Wade in the fifth inning.

The Panthers pulled within a run in the seventh inning before Hunt ended the game with a strikeout.

Huntingdon travels to Wesleyan on Saturday for a conference doubleheader. Game 1 is set for 2 p.m.
