Lady Hawks and Covenant set for deciding Game 3 on Saturday

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon softball team rallied to win Game 1 but came up short in Game 2 on Friday in the first round of the USA South Athletic Conference Tournament.

Huntingdon won the first game 4-3 before Covenant won 5-1 in the second game.

The No. 3 seed Lady Hawks (16-24) and the No. 4 seed Lady Scots (22-16) will play at noon on Saturday to decide the best-of-three series. The winner advances to the double elimination portion of the conference tournament in LaGrange, Ga., on Thursday.

Freshman pitcher Haley Riddle (2-1) pitched one inning of relief to pick up the win in Game 1 and drove in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Trailing 3-1 in the seventh, Huntingdon's Brandi Blair scored on an error and Alex Teague drove in MacKenzie Smelley to tie the game.

With two outs and a runner on third, Riddle doubled to left field to score Jesse Dunn and end the game. For Riddle, who entered the game with just 11 collegiate at-bats, the game-winning double was her fourth hit and second RBI of the season.

Freshman Samara Miller scored Huntingdon's first run of the game on an RBI single by Smelley in the first inning. Miller and Smelley each finished the game with two hits.

In Game 2, Huntingdon fell behind 3-0 before Amber Wade scored on an RBI single by Lindsey Selph in the sixth inning. Covenant answered with two late runs to make it a four-run game.

Madison Hunt (6-5) took the loss in four innings.

Blair was the only Lady Hawk with multiple hits and finished 2-for-3.
