Lady Hawks push winning streak to five games with sweep of Salem

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Huntingdon softball team swept Salem College 2-1 and 12-4 on Saturday.

With Saturday's wins, Huntingdon has won five straight and seven of its last eight games.

The Lady Hawks put together 25 hits in the doubleheader, including matching their season-high with 17 hits in Game 2. Huntingdon also had a season-high 10 RBIs in Game 2 and matched its season-high for runs scored.

Alyssa Singleterry, Lydia Lewis and Madison Perryman combined for 13 of Huntingdon's 25 hits, four RBIs and seven runs. Singleterry finished the day 5-for-9 with three RBIs, three runs and a triple. Lewis was 4-for-6 with two runs and a double and Perryman was 4-for-6 with an RBI, two runs, a double and a triple.

Pitchers Madison Hunt and Lauren Melton combined for 12 strikeouts, two wins and a save in the doubleheader. Melton (4-1) earned the win in Game 1 with six strikeouts, a walk, four hits and one earned run in 6 2/3 innings. Hunt (7-1) earned a save in Game 1 and picked up the win in Game 2 with six strikeouts, two walks, five hits and four earned runs in seven innings.

In Game 1, Huntingdon took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when McKenzie Ridgway singled to drive in Singleterry. In the fourth inning, Caitlyn Caffee singled to drive in Annie Nolan to make it 2-0.

Salem answered with one run in the sixth and put runners in scoring position with two Huntingdon errors in the bottom of the seventh. With runners at second and third, Hunt forced a lineout to Ridgway at third base to end the game.

Singleterry and Ridgway each finished with two hits in Game 1.

In Game 2, Huntingdon rallied from an early 3-0 deficit with two runs in the second inning and one in the third. Huntingdon took the lead for good with two runs in the fourth inning as Perryman scored on a single by Singleterry and Hannah Vines scored on a ground out by Ridgway.

Huntingdon closed the game with three runs in the sixth inning and four runs in the seventh inning.

Singleterry was 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs and Ridgway had three RBIs and a run. Perryman and Vines were both 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI and Lewis was 3-for-4 with two runs. Rayne Ellis was 2-for-3 with two runs, Caffee had two hits and a run and Nolan had two RBIs.
