Huntingdon women’s basketball wins on the road to open season

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Huntingdon women's basketball team built a double-digit lead in the first half and knocked off Pensacola Christian 66-40 on Tuesday.

The Lady Hawks (1-0) pulled away early in the second half and were able to substitute freely the remainder of the game.

"Being the first game, we started out slow," Huntingdon head coach Buzz Phillips said. "But we picked it up midway through the first half and built a 15-point lead. I challenged the team to put the game away in the first five or six minutes of the second half. The girls answered the challenge and it was good to be able to play all 15 girls that made the trip."

Morgan Crawford led Huntingdon with 14 points, six rebounds and five steals. The junior was one of four Lady Hawks to score in double figures. Freshman Chelsea Graham and senior Jessi Andrews each added 11 points and sophomore Jodi Montalvo followed with 10 points.

"The balanced scoring was good to see and it was good to see some of our freshmen step up," Phillips said. "We still have a lot of work to do, but looking at the big picture, I saw a lot of good things today."

Montalvo led Huntingdon with eight rebounds and Sekal Ousley grabbed six rebounds. Graham and Andrews each had three assists and LaTerial Williams recorded five steals. The Lady Hawks finished with 14 steals.

Pensacola Christian finished with 30 turnovers. Huntingdon turned the ball over 16 times. The Lady Hawks were 7-of-17 from 3-point range and Pensacola Christian was 0-for-11 behind the arc.

The Lady Hawks play at Millsaps (2-1) on Sunday at 4 p.m.

"The big thing is we have a game under our belt before we go to Millsaps on Sunday," Phillips said. "They have a good team and we've got a good challenge coming up."
