Huntingdon women’s basketball falls to Howard Payne

CLINTON, Miss. – The Huntingdon women's basketball team played Howard Payne evenly until late in the second half on Saturday.

But a late run by the Lady Yellow Jackets made the difference as Howard Payne took a 76-66 win on the second day of the Zaxby's Coaches vs. Cancer Classic.

"We knew we were going to be challenged this weekend and we played two very good teams," Huntingdon head coach Buzz Phillips said. "We have some work to do, but I also saw a lot of good things out of our team.

"We faced some adversity with injury and illness today and we were missing juniors Jodi Montalvo and Raven Prater. We want to get them healthy, go back to work and get ready for Tuesday."

The Lady Hawks travel to Pensacola Christian on Tuesday for a 5:30 p.m. game.

On Saturday, Huntingdon (0-2) played from behind for much of the game, but never trailed by more than 11 points until the final minutes. Huntingdon trailed 44-37 at the half and 48-37 early in the second half.

Behind a 22-9 run, the Lady Hawks rallied and took a 59-57 lead with 9:20 to play. Senior Devin Douglas scored the final five points of the run.

But from there, the momentum swung to Howard Payne (2-0). Huntingdon was held to two points during the next seven minutes as the Lady Yellow Jackets took a 74-61 lead with 2:09 to play. A Katie Martin layup and an Alyson Burke 3-pointer pulled Huntingdon within eight points but that was as close as the Lady Hawks could get.

Douglas led Huntingdon with 18 points, 10 rebounds and four steals. Morgan Crawford added 11 points, five assists and four steals and Burke finished with 10 points. Tanjanik Munford grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds.
