Lady Hawks put Wesleyan away early

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon women's basketball team picked up its second straight win with a 77-47 win over Wesleyan on Saturday.

The Lady Hawks (2-2) built a 12-point lead in the first six minutes of the game and led by as many as 22 points in the first half. Leading 42-24 to start the second half, Huntingdon pushed ahead to a 33-point lead in the second half and led by at least 26 points for the final 15 minutes of the game.

"All of these players have been working hard this season and it was good to be able to play everyone today," Huntingdon head coach Buzz Phillips said. "We're still a developing team, but we're getting better each game. Our younger players are responding well and becoming more comfortable with what we're doing.

"But we still have some growing up to do. We have some older players who need to step up. Things aren't always going to go your way during a game, and some of our players have to learn to put things behind them and be ready to take advantage of the next opportunity."

Senior Pat Pickens, who set the Lady Hawks' NCAA-era single-game scoring record in her last game against Rust College, set another program record with 20 rebounds against Wesleyan. Pickens also had 17 points, three assists and three steals. Entering the game, Pickens was averaging 26.7 points (third nationally in Division III) and 11.7 rebounds per game.

Mackenzie Garmany hit five 3-pointers and finished with 17 points, three assists and two steals and Jenna Dorman had a season-high 12 points and seven rebounds.

As a team, the Lady Hawks tied their program-record for rebounds in a game with 77. Tan Munford pulled down nine rebounds, Jello Weatherspoon had seven rebounds, Tierra Henry had six rebounds and six steals and Alex Moore had six rebounds.

Huntingdon hosts Oglethorpe at 3 p.m. on Sunday.
