Garmany leads Huntingdon to conference win

DANVILLE, Va. – Junior Mackenzie Garmany scored a career-high 27 points to help lead the Huntingdon women's basketball team past Averett, 74-64 on Saturday.

In a game that featured six lead changes, the Lady Hawks (7-8, 2-6 USA South) battled Averett closely through the first quarter and trailed by nine at the half, 28-35.

Huntingdon turned in a strong performance in the third quarter, outscoring the Cougars 19-6 and taking its final lead in the game with 1:45 left in the quarter.

Garmany went 10-for-12 from the free throw line and scored 13 points in the fourth to the help the Lady Hawks pick up their second conference win this season.

"Winning this game on the road really took a load off of our shoulders," Huntingdon head coach Buzz Phillips said. "We played well in the second half and I think our defense won us this game."

Garmany finished with 5 3-pointers. Her 27 points is a career-high, beating her previous high by one point when she scored 26 against Methodist last season.

Juliette Harp recorded her 10th double-double this season with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Harp currently leads the USA South Athletic Conference with 12.3 rebounds per game.  

Freshman Tiarrial Duncan finished with six points, four steals and 10 rebounds.

The Lady Hawks return to action on Sunday at Ferrum at 1 p.m.
