Lady Hawks earn 200th win of NCAA era

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Junior Shaonica Thomas helped power the Huntingdon women's basketball team in a 64-53 win over Covenant on Saturday.

The win was the program's 200th victory of the NCAA era.

Thomas and senior T.I. Duncan combined for 41 of Huntingdon's 64 points against the Scots. Thomas led all scorers with a season-high 24 points and was 10-of-14 from the field. She also pulled down a team-high nine rebounds. Duncan added 17 points and six rebounds.

Huntingdon (14-4, 7-3 USA South) never trailed in the game but could not pull away from Covenant (5-13, 3-7 USA South). Huntingdon built a 12-point lead, 21-9, midway through the second quarter and led 27-18 at the half.

But the Scots answered and cut Huntingdon's lead to three points, 38-35, by the end of the third quarter. The Lady Hawks extended their lead back to seven points early in the fourth quarter, but only held a 52-48 lead with four minutes to play.

 The final four minutes belonged to Huntingdon as the Lady Hawks closed the game with a 12-5 run. Baskets by Thomas, Alex Lowery and Duncan gave Huntingdon a 58-48 lead with 1:41 remaining.

After another basket by Thomas, Indya Lawrence made 2-of-4 free throws and Duncan made 2-of-2 free throws in the final 33 seconds to close the game.

               

Records: Huntingdon (14-4, 7-3 USA South); Covenant (5-13, 3-7 USA South)              

 

Notable: Thomas and Duncan continue to be among the USA South Athletic Conference's leaders in field-goal percentage this season. Thomas leads the conference with a 60.9 field-goal percentage (84-for-138) and Duncan is third with a 56.4 percentage (101-for-179). Duncan is also tied for sixth in the conference in points per game with 15.5. Meredith's Kimberly Schuh leads the USA South with 19.9 points per game.
