Lady Hawks beat Piedmont to extend program-record winning streak

DEMOREST, Ga. – The Huntingdon women's basketball team used a big first half to take control and beat Piedmont 75-59 on Saturday.

The victory pushed Huntingdon's overall winning streak to eight games and the Lady Hawks' winning streak on the road to 11 games. Both streaks are NCAA-era records for the program.

Alex Lowery scored 15 points to lead three Huntingdon players in double figures. Shaonica Thomas added 13 points and nine rebounds and Ry Whetstone followed with 11 points.

T.I. Duncan finished with nine points, six rebounds and three assists and Mia Hudson had eight rebounds and three assists. Kassidy Crawford had a team-high four assists and Hannah Parks finished with five rebounds and three blocks.

Huntingdon (18-4, 11-3 USA South) overcame a slow start and began to come around midway through the first half. After falling behind 9-2 in the first six minutes of the game, the Lady Hawks outscored Piedmont 34-15 in the final 14 minutes of the first half.

Huntingdon trailed 17-14 after one quarter before taking the lead for good in the second quarter. A basket by Whetstone with 7:59 left in the first half gave the Lady Hawks their first lead of the game.

A basket by Thomas pushed Huntingdon's lead to double digits in the final minute of the first half. The Lady Hawks led 36-24 at halftime. In the third quarter, Piedmont (19-5, 13-2 USA South) pulled within eight points before Huntingdon pulled away for good.

Huntingdon led by double digits for the final 11:57 of the game and built as much as an 18-point lead four times.

Notable

Series History -- Saturday's 16-point win was largest margin of victory for Huntingdon against Piedmont in the history of the 33-game series. The win was the Lady Hawks' second at Piedmont and the sixth overall in the series.

Eleven conference wins and counting – Saturday's win was the 11th conference victory of the season, setting a new mark for the Lady Hawks in the USA South. Huntingdon's previous best conference record was 10-4 during the 2016-17 season. With two conference games remaining, the Lady Hawks are 11-3 this season.
