Schreyer returns to lead Huntingdon golf program

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – David Schreyer has great memories of his time as a student-athlete at Huntingdon College.

It was a four-year experience that changed his life and helped set the course for a 17-year career as a professional golfer. As Huntingdon's new Director of Golf, Schreyer hopes to help a new generation of golfers have a similar collegiate experience.

"Huntingdon has always been close to my heart," Schreyer said. "It made me who I am. I was a decent high school player when I came to Huntingdon and when I left I was a completely different golfer. I left Huntingdon right for the PGA Tour my first year. That doesn't happen too often.

"I enjoyed my collegiate experience and I want to help our golfers do the same. I want to help them play great golf, have a great college experience, get a great education and leave here with the same love for Huntingdon that I have."

Schreyer was officially introduced Friday morning by Huntingdon College President J. Cameron West and athletic director Buzz Phillips.

"David Schreyer was a great player -- both at the collegiate and professional levels --and has built a successful business teaching in the Atlanta area," West said. "He brings to Huntingdon outstanding skills as a player, coach and teacher, but more importantly, he brings love for his alma mater, for the game of golf, and for his role as a teacher.

"We welcome David home to the Huntingdon family and couldn't be more thrilled that he is here to carry into the future Huntingdon's excellent reputation for intercollegiate golf."

Phillips said Schreyer's credentials speak for themselves.

Schreyer earned first-team All-American honors in 1986, 1987, 1988 and 1989. He was the NAIA individual national champion in 1988 and was part of NAIA national championship teams in 1986, 1987 and 1988.

After college, Schreyer played 17 years of tour golf. From 1990-2007 he competed on several tours, including the PGA Tour, Nationwide Tour, South African PGA Tour and NGA Pro Golf Tour. His 10 wins on the NGA Pro Tour rank second all-time.

He was inducted into the Huntingdon College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2001.

"David is a Huntingdon man and we're glad to have him on our staff," Phillips said. "He was a four-time All-American and was part of three national championships at Huntingdon, he was a professional golfer for 17 years and became a respected instructor. We're very fortunate to have him join our staff and we're looking forward to a successful future with him as our Director of Golf."

Schreyer spent the past five years as an instructor in Atlanta. Developing golfers to their full potential has become his passion.

"Playing all of those years and teaching for the last five years, I had a really good business in Atlanta," Schreyer said. "But working with players, who have the potential to be really good, and being able to help them realize their potential is what I really enjoy.

"Having been able to play all of the years I did and be around the game, I've tried to take what I learned inside the ropes and teach it to those that want to be there one day."

As for his goals for the Huntingdon men's and women's golf programs, Schreyer said he wants to build both into national championship contenders.

"What I know of Huntingdon golf is on that top shelf," Schreyer said pointing to the trophies for Huntingdon's six national titles in the 1980s and early 1990s. "My goal is to win national titles here. That's what we expected when I was here and I don't expect anything less now."
