Huntingdon women’s golf looking to build off of fall season

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon women's golf team raised its expectations last fall.

The Lady Hawks turned in four of the top five rounds in program history and twice broke the sixth-year program's record for best round. This spring, the Lady Hawks want to continue the success.

"We couldn't be happier with where the women are after the fall," Huntingdon Director of Golf Dave Schreyer said. "We were ranked 150-something last year and now we're 39th in Division III. That's probably the biggest jump in college golf.

"Assistant coach Ashley Aguilera has done a great job with the girls and is a great mentor for them. We've worked very hard with them and I think the girls are poised to have a great spring and pick up where they left off in the fall. They crushed school records time and time again in the fall and we're hoping to see that continue in the spring."

Huntingdon begins competition on Monday in the Coosa Women's Golf Invitational in Rome, Ga. Following Coosa, the Lady Hawks will head to the Jekyll Island Women's Collegiate Invitational on March 14-16 and the Callaway Collegiate on April 5-6.

"We'll get a big taste of Division III competition during our second and third tournaments," Schreyer said. "Those two events will feature almost all of the top 30 teams in Division III. We're going to see a lot of the teams that will be at the national tournament and it's going to be a good gauge for us."

Leading the team this spring are a senior, three sophomores and three freshmen. The lone senior, Saem Hur, has been a key member of the team since her freshman season.

Of the top 12 individual rounds in the Lady Hawks' history, Hur is responsible for eight of those rounds. Hur and former Huntingdon golfer Ali Hamil are tied for the best round in program history at 73.

"Saem has been an important part of this program since her freshman season," Schreyer said. "She is a senior leader and is a catalyst for this team. We're going to hate to lose her after this season, but we're excited to see what's in store this spring."
