Huntingdon women’s golf tied for 12th at Jekyll Island

JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. – The Huntingdon women's golf team played strong on the front nine but struggled on the back nine on Friday in the opening round of the Jekyll Island Women's Collegiate.

The Lady Hawks led the field during much of their round, but enter Saturday's second round tied for 12th in the 20-team field. Huntingdon finished the opening round with a score of 348.

"The girls came out very strong again and had the lead through 10 holes. But the back nine was a different story as shots started slipping away," Huntingdon assistant coach Ashley Aguilera said. "We've never been in that position before. We didn't talk about where we were in the standings during the round, but with the live scoreboards on the course, they saw where they were and then they saw the lead slipping away.

"The girls played amazing on the front nine, and even though we didn't play as well on the back nine, I'm not disappointed. This is something we'll learn from."

Huntingdon Director of Golf Dave Schreyer said he feels like the experience will make the team stronger.

"It's part of the learning process," Schreyer said. "We're a young team and we will learn from this experience and be better prepared when we face it again."

Entering the second round, Rhodes College leads with a score of 315 and the University of Texas-Tyler and Mary Hardin-Baylor are tied for second at 322.

Elizabeth Cheng (Hollins University), Elizabeth Kim (Oglethorpe) and Jessica Zweifel (Rhodes) each shot 5-over-par 77 and are tied for first.

Huntingdon freshman LeeAnn Cahoon is three strokes off the lead and tied for 15th at 80. Freshman Savannah Humber shot 86, senior Saem Hur shot 87, sophomore Jessie Culey shot 95 and freshman Courtney Harville shot 101.
