Lady Hawks set new program record in Rd. 1 of MCC Invitational

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon women's golf team opened the fall season with the best round in program history.

The Lady Hawks shot 309 on Sunday in the opening round of the Montgomery Country Club Women's Invitational. The round shattered the Lady Hawks' previous of record of 321 set last season. Eight of the top nine rounds in program history have been recorded since the fall of 2013.

"What a great day for the Lady Hawks," Huntingdon Director of Golf Dave Schreyer said. "We are right on track with our recruiting and it is showing. Our talent level has increased dramatically in a short time. These girls have a lot of potential and I'm excited about the next round and the entire season."

The Lady Hawks lead the team standings by two strokes. Methodist is second at 311 and the Methodist B-Team is third at 326.

Freshman Kelsey Spivey led Huntingdon with a 2-over-par 75 on Sunday. Spivey's round was two strokes off the Lady Hawks' individual record and the second-best round vs. par. Former Huntingdon golfer Ali Hamil set the program record with a 73 on a par-72 course during the 2010-11 season and Saem Hur shot 73 on a par-70 course during the 2012-13 season. Before Sunday, Hamil (one time) and Hur (twice) were the only Lady Hawks to shoot 75.

Spivey is in second and two strokes off the lead entering Monday's final round. Sewanee's Emily Javadi shot an even-par 73 on Sunday.

Behind Spivey, sophomore LeeAnn Cahoon and freshman Lindsey Huff are tied for fourth at 4-over 77. Sophomore Courtney Harville is tied for ninth at 80 and sophomore Savannah Humber is 14th at 81.

Playing as individuals, junior Jessie Culey shot 92 for Huntingdon, freshman Mackenzie Chapman shot 93 and junior Shay Roberson shot 97.
