Lady Hawks win first tournament in program history

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon women's golf team followed up the best round in program history on Sunday with the program's first tournament win on Monday.

The Lady Hawks shot 624 during the two rounds of the Montgomery Country Club Women's Intercollegiate to win by 12 strokes. Methodist, which was ranked second in Division III in the final Golf World/WGCA poll last May, was the tournament runner-up at 636.

"This is amazing for the girls," Huntingdon Director of Golf Dave Schreyer said. "We've been working to develop the women's program and we've come a long way in the past two years. This is a great experience for this young team. These girls haven't been in the hunt to win a tournament before and to be in the hunt and actually win the first tournament of the year is huge. Mentally, it should give them an edge."

Coming off of Sunday's round of 309, the Lady Hawks shot 315 on Monday. Before this weekend, the program record for a round was 321. Nine of the top 10 rounds in program history have been recorded since the start of the 2013 fall season.

Huntingdon's 36-hole total of 624 was 30 strokes better than the previous record of 654 set last season in the Birmingham-Southern Shootout.

"I am so proud of these girls and what they have already accomplished. But this is only the beginning," Huntingdon assistant coach Ashley Aguilera said. "Today's win and the scores we shot this week show the potential we have to play great all year long."

Sophomore LeeAnn Cahoon finished second in the tournament and led Huntingdon with a 1-under-par 72 in the final round and a 3-over 149 for the tournament. Sewanee's Emily Javadi was the tournament medalist at 148.

Cahoon's 72 set the Lady Hawks' record for an individual round and was the first under-par round in program history.

"LeeAnn is a quality player. She hit a lot of quality shots throughout the tournament and was 4-under with about five or six holes to play today," Schreyer said. "It's a big day for her and just a sign of things to come for her. She is one of the top players in Division III golf and she is just going to continue to keep getting better."

Freshman Kelsey Spivey finished fourth with a 36-hole total of 156. Sophomore Savannah Humber was 10th at 161, sophomore Courtney Harville tied for 11th at 162 and freshman Lindsey Huff was 20th at 167.

Playing as individuals for the Lady Hawks, junior Jessie Culey finished with a two-round total of 185, freshman Mackenzie Chapman shot 190 and junior Shay Roberson shot 193.

Huntingdon returns to action on Sept. 20 in the DePauw Small College Classic.
