Women’s golf in 5th after Rd. 1 of Golfweek D3 Fall Preview

DESTIN, Fla. – The Huntingdon women's golf team fired the second best round in program history with a 314 on Sunday in the opening round of the Golfweek Division III Fall Preview.

Entering Monday's second round at Baytowne Golf Club, the Lady Hawks are in fifth. Washington University-St. Louis leads the tournament at 296, the University of Texas-Tyler is second at 304, Carthage College is third at 305 and Washington and Lee University is fourth at 308.

Washington and Lee's Caroline Holloway turned in Sunday's best round with a 3-under-par 69.

Three Lady Hawks are in the top 15 after the first round. Freshman Kelsey Spivey shot a 4-over 76 and is tied for 10th. Sophomores LeeAnn Cahoon and Savannah Humber are tied for 15th at 5-over 77. Freshman Lindsey Huff shot 84 and sophomore Courtney Harville shot 89.

"It was a solid day for the girls," Huntingdon Director of Golf Dave Schreyer said. "I know the girls are a little disappointed, especially LeeAnn. She was 3-under with five holes to play. But we are in positions we have never been before so it's understandable that nerves can get in the way. The more we get out of our comfort zone, the more we learn and the better we will be down the road.

"The cool thing is we had a disappointing finish and we still carded one of the best rounds in Huntingdon history. Our hard work is showing and I am proud of Coach Ashley Aguilera and the girls."
