Hawks finish sixth in Georgia Collegiate Invitational
MARIETTA, Ga. – The Huntingdon wrestling team won eight matches and finished sixth in the Georgia Collegiate Invitational on Sunday.
Huntingdon finished with 24 points. Host Life University, the 11th-ranked team in NAIA, won the tournament with 129 points. Darton State, the 17th-ranked team in the junior college rankings, was second with 101.5 points.
Emmanuel College was third with 67 points, Truett-McConnell was fourth with 65.5 points and Brewton-Parker was fifth with 59 points. Allen College, Shorter University and Tennessee Chattanooga failed to score.
"The guys wrestled hard," Huntingdon head coach Tom Storey said. "I am impressed with the marked improvement I've seen from week-to-week. We are well on our way to representing Huntingdon in our first trip to the regional tournament."
Wade Thomas (125 pounds), Robert Lowery (141) and Kyle Borgus (157) combined for six of the Hawks' eight wins. All three wrestlers finished 2-2 and reached the consolation semifinals in their weight classes.
Thomas lost his first match by pin. In the consolation bracket, he won twice (by decision and by pin) before losing by pin in the consolation semifinals.
Lowery lost his opening match by pin before winning twice in the consolation bracket (by pin and by decision) and losing by pin in the consolation semifinals.
Borgus won his first match by pin before losing by decision to drop into the consolation bracket. In the consolation bracket, he won by pin and lost by pin.
Brewer Gilliland (149) and Deon Maxwell (165) accounted for the Hawks' other two wins. Gilliland earned a pin in his first match and Maxwell opened the Invitational with a win by major decision.
Huntingdon will compete in the Truett-McConnell Dual on Friday.
