Hawks open season in Georgia Intercollegiate Tournament

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. – The Huntingdon wrestling team won eight matches in the Georgia Intercollegiate Tournament on Sunday. 

Jared Mercer (149 pounds) and Deon Maxwell (157 pounds) were each 2-2 in the tournament. Ryan Brooks (125 pounds), Mason Blakeney (125 pounds), Matt Gilson (141 pounds) and Cody Dixon (184 pounds) each won one match. Team scores were not kept for the tournament.

Mercer won his first two matches by decision (5-2 and 12-8) to advance to the 149-pound quarterfinals. Mercer lost 7-2 in the quarterfinals and lost by pin in the consolation bracket.

Maxwell lost his first match by pin before winning 5-1 and 5-2 in the 157-pound consolation bracket. The sophomore lost his third consolation match 4-0.

In the 125-pound weight class, Brooks and Blakeney were each 1-2. Brooks won his first match by pin before losing by pin in the second round and in the consolation bracket. Blakeney won his opening match by major decision, 12-2, before falling by major decision in the second round. Blakeney lost his consolation match 8-6.

In the 141-pound class, Gilson lost by pin in the first round before winning by major decision in the consolation bracket. Gilson lost his second consolation match by decision.

Dixon lost by decision in the first round of the 184-pound class. In the consolation bracket, he won 10-3 before losing by major decision.

Huntingdon returns to action on Nov. 20 at Southern Virginia.
