Huntingdon earns first two wins of NCAA era
BUENA VISTA, Va. – The Huntingdon wrestling team went 2-2 in the Southern Virginia University Duals this weekend.
The Hawks' 33-18 win over Southern Virginia on Friday night was the first of the NCAA era. Huntingdon added a second win on Saturday with 45-3 win over Hampden-Sydney. This is Huntingdon's second season of competition as a NCAA program.
The Hawks fell to Washington and Lee 22-21 on Saturday and closed the weekend with a 32-24 loss to Greensboro.
"This was an exciting weekend for us," first-year Huntingdon head coach Craig Duncan said. "The guys have been working hard and coming together and we wrestled well this weekend. There are a lot of positives from this trip that we can build on."
Sophomores Deon Maxwell (157 pounds) and Jesse Rowlen (285) each went 4-0 in the Duals. Maxwell won two matches by decision, one by pin and one by forfeit. Rowlen recorded two pins and won two matches by decision.
Freshmen Mason Blakeney (125 and 133) and Cody Dixon (184) were each 3-1.
Blakeney won by decision at 133 pounds against SVU and won at 125 pounds against Washington and Lee (decision) and Hampden-Sydney (forfeit). Dixon won by decision against SVU and won by forfeit against Hampden-Sydney and Greensboro.
Freshman Wyatt Miller (165) won by pin against Hampden-Sydney and Greensboro and freshman Ryan Brooks (125), sophomore Matt Gilson (141) and freshman Jared Mercer (149) each won two matches by forfeit. Senior Zach Malone won one match by forfeit and freshman Scott Clements won one match by forfeit.
Huntingdon returns to action on Dec. 6 at Life University.
