Beck leads the Hawks in Huntingdon College Duals

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon wrestling team had seven wrestlers earn two or more wins in the Huntingdon College Duals in Roland Arena on Saturday.

In the first match of the day, the Hawks defeated Southern Virginia 34-16 then followed with a 27-15 loss to Truett-McConnell. Huntingdon closed the day with a 32-15 victory over University of the Ozarks.

DeAndre Beck, wrestling in the 141 weight class, led Huntingdon with three victories, including a win by forfeit. Ryan Brooks (125), Mason Blakeney (133), Quintez Pearson (149), Deon Maxwell (165/174), Wyatt Miller (174/184) and Jesse Rowlen (285) each finished the day with a 2-1 record.

Sam Garrison (157) won his lone match of the day while Pierce Erhardt (157) went 1-1.

In the opening match of the day against Southern Virginia, Huntingdon jumped out to a 21-0 lead by winning three of the first four matches by forfeit. Blakeney (133) picked up a 13-11 decision for his first win of the day.

Maxwell (165) added to the lead with a 3-2 decision before Miller (174) gave the Hawks four points with a 19-6 major decision. Rowlen (285) closed the match by pinning his opponent in 2:24.

Against Truett-McConnell, Brooks (125) started the match with a 5-4 decision to give the Hawks an early 3-0 lead. After a pin by Truett-McConnell, Beck (141) defeated his opponent in a 6-4 sudden victory decision before Pearson (149) took a 10-3 decision. Erhardt (157) won by forfeit to put Huntingdon up 15-6, but Truett-McConnell took the remaining matches to take the win.

In the final match for Huntingdon, seven wrestlers earned wins to lead the Hawks to victory. Blakeney (133) took a 10-5 decision before Beck (141) turned in a dominating performance, winning 22-7. Garrison (157) and Erhardt (165) each used pins to put Huntingdon up 20-9.

A pair of decisions by Maxwell (174) and Miller (184) sealed the win for the Hawks while Rowlen (285) closed out the match with a pin in 2:00.

Huntingdon competes in the Cumberland Open on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m.
