Huntingdon places 2nd in Southeast Wrestling Conference Tournament

GREENSBORO, N.C.  – Seniors DeAndre Beck and Jesse Rowlen each won their weight classes and the Huntingdon wrestling team placed second in the Southeast Wrestling Conference Tournament on Saturday.

Ferrum won the seven-team tournament with 100 points and Huntingdon was second with 87.5 points. Greensboro was third with 65 points.

Beck won the 141-pound weight class and Rowlen won the 285-pound weight class. Six other Hawks placed in the top four of their weight divisions.

Beck won three matches to place first, winning one match by pin and two matches by decision. Rowlen also finished the day 3-0, winning two matches by pin and one by decision.

Behind the weight-class champions, Quintez Pearson (149), Kaleb Fontenot (157) and Cody Dixon (184) each placed second, Nelson Elder (133) and Deon Maxwell (165) placed third and Jared Mercer (157) placed fourth.                       

Pearson won his first two matches by technical fall and decision before losing by pin in the championship match. Fontenot won his first two matches by pin and injury default before losing by technical fall in the championship match. Dixon won his first match by decision before losing by decision in the finals.

Elder was 3-2 in the tournament, winning by pin and losing by pin to drop into the consolation bracket. In the consolation bracket, Elder won by injury default and decision before winning the third-place match by decision.

Maxwell won by technical fall and lost by major decision in the main draw before winning two matches, including the third-place match, by pin. Mercer lost his first match by decision before winning by decision and injury default in the consolation bracket. Mercer lost the third-place match by decision.

 

Coming Up: Huntingdon will compete in the NCAA Regional Championship on Feb. 24.
