Beck’s 5th-place finish leads Huntingdon in Lower Midwest Regional

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The Huntingdon wrestling team turned in its best performance yet in the NCAA Division III Regional Tournament on Saturday and Sunday.

Competing in the Lower Midwest Regional, formerly known as the Central Region, the fourth-year Hawks won 11 matches, scored 22 points and finished 13th in the field of 17 teams.

To put those numbers in perspective, during Huntingdon's first three appearances in the NCAA Regional, the Hawks combined to win nine matches and score 21.5 points.

Senior DeAndre Beck led the Hawks with four wins and a fifth-place finish in the 141-pound weight class. The fifth-place finish is the best yet by a Hawk. Beck became the first Huntingdon wrestler to place last season when he finished sixth. In three Regional appearances, Beck won nine matches.

In his final regional appearance, Beck won his first match by pin before losing 3-2 in the quarterfinals. In the consolation bracket, he won 13-6 and 6-4 in a tiebreaker before losing 4-1 in the consolation semifinals. Beck won the fifth-place match by major decision, 18-8.

Beck closes his Huntingdon career as the Hawks' NCAA-era leader in career wins and wins in a season. In three seasons with the program, he compiled a 48-13 record. He set the season-record for wins with 17 last season before breaking the mark with a 26-5 record this season.

Senior Jesse Rowlen was 2-2 in the 285-pound weight class. Rowlen won his first match by pin before losing by major decision in the quarterfinals. In the consolation bracket, Rowlen won by decision and lost by pin.

Rowlen ends his Huntingdon career with a 39-14 record and was 20-4 this season. This is the first season the Hawks have had two 20-win wrestlers during the NCAA era.

Five other Hawks won one match in the Regional. Ryan Brooks (125), Jacob Smith (133), Quintez Pearson (149), Kaleb Fontenot (157) and Cody Dixon (184) each lost their first match before going 1-1 in the consolation bracket.

Wartburg College won its sixth straight Regional with 181.5 points. Loras College was second with 130 points and Coe College was third with 97 points.
