Huntingdon joins USA South Athletic Conference

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Huntingdon College President J. Cameron West announced today that Huntingdon will join the NCAA-Division III USA South Athletic Conference beginning in the fall of 2013. Huntingdon and Covenant College (Ga.) were approved as members at a meeting of the USA South presidents yesterday. Current USA South members are Averett University (Va.), Ferrum College (Va.), Greensboro College (N.C.), Mary Baldwin College (Va.), Meredith College (N.C.), Methodist University (N.C.), N.C. Wesleyan College (N.C.), William Peace University (N.C.), and the conference's newest members, LaGrange College (Ga.), Piedmont College (Ga.), and Maryville College (Tenn.).

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Excelling in athletics and academics can be tricky. But finding the right balance between sports and school wasn't too hard for Huntingdon senior Ginger Tyson. A chemistry major, Tyson has been on the Dean's List of High Honors during six of her seven semesters and was a starter for the women's soccer team for four seasons. It wasn't always easy, but as graduation approaches, Tyson knows the experience has been worth it.

DECATUR, Ga. – The Great South Athletic Conference recently recognized 20 Huntingdon student-athletes in four sports with the release of the GSAC All-Academic teams. The student-athletes from volleyball, men's and women's soccer and women's cross country excelled in the classroom while representing the Hawks in competition this fall.

DECATUR, Ga. – Three Huntingdon women’s soccer players were recognized with the release of the Great South Athletic Conference awards on Thursday. Senior Ginger Tyson and junior Jenny Burnash were both named to the All-Conference team. Freshman Jessica Salinas was selected to the All-Freshman team.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Huntingdon women’s soccer season came to an end on Tuesday in the Great South Athletic Conference tournament quarterfinals. The Hawks, the sixth seed in the GSAC tournament, fell to third-seeded Salem 1-0. Salem (11-4-2) will play second-seeded Piedmont in the GSAC semifinals on Friday at 12:45 p.m. The GSAC championship is Saturday at 1 p.m. The GSAC semifinals and championship will be played in LaGrange, Ga. Huntingdon ends the season at 6-10-1.

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. – The Huntingdon women’s soccer team played Covenant to a scoreless tie for almost 79 minutes on Saturday. But the Scots used a Dana Streufert goal with 11:09 left to play to beat Huntingdon 1-0.

Kelsey Schaffernoth scored in the 64th minute and Dilyn MacLean added the final goal in the 78th minute for Piedmont (15-1, 6-1 Great South Athletic Conference).
