Huntingdon women’s tennis knocks off Agnes Scott

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon women's tennis team won a battle of Top-20 ITA Atlantic South Regional teams on Wednesday. The 20th-ranked Lady Hawks won two doubles matches and four singles matches to beat 14th-ranked Agnes Scott 6-3.

The win snapped a five-match losing streak to Agnes Scott (2-2, 0-1 GSAC), dating to the 2010 regular season. This was the 10th meeting between the two teams since the 2008 Great South Athletic Conference tournament finals. Huntingdon won the GSAC championship in 2008 and regular-season matches in 2009 and 2010. The Scotties won in the 2009 and 2010 GSAC championship and both the regular-season and GSAC championship in 2011 and 2012.

"This win is a step in the right direction for us," Huntingdon head coach Ximena Moore said. "This was a good win over a good team, but we still need to get better and we need to continue to improve."

On Wednesday, Huntingdon (4-0, 3-0 GSAC) picked up an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles (Micaela White-Katie Scott) and an 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles (Taylor Clark-Rory Wilson) to take a 2-1 lead into singles. Clark won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4 singles, Hannah Still won 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3 singles and freshman Farrah Mahan clinched the victory with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 6 singles. Britni Thibodeau added the final victory with a 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 2 singles.

"Doubles was a big turning point for us," Moore said. "We were behind in No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, but we came back to win both matches. That gave us a spark going into singles. Farrah won the deciding match, but all six girls competed well. We came through with four good wins and we battled in the two losses."

Huntingdon travels to Oglethorpe on Friday.
