Lady Hawks eliminate Avenging Angels in Rd. 1 of USA South Tournament

LAGRANGE, Ga. – The Huntingdon women's tennis team opened the USA South Athletic Conference Tournament with a 7-2 win over Meredith on Friday.

Huntingdon will face Methodist in the semifinals on Saturday at 10 a.m. (Eastern). In their fifth season in the USA South, this is the third time the Lady Hawks have advanced to the conference tournament semifinals.

Friday's win was the 17th of the season for Huntingdon (17-2). The 17 wins are the second most by a Huntingdon team during the NCAA era and one short of the record set by the 2013 team. The 2013 team finished with an 18-4 record.

This was the third straight season Huntingdon and Meredith have played in the opening round. After losing to Meredith in 2016, Huntingdon has won the past two seasons.

Huntingdon swept doubles to take a 3-0 lead on Friday and clinched the match with wins at No. 3 and No. 2 singles.

The No. 1 doubles team of Josie Waddell and Zoya Robinson and the No. 2 doubles team of Heather Tabor and Caroline McBroom each won 8-3. The No. 3 doubles team of Clayton Waring and Kacy Howard won 8-1. 

In singles, Robinson (No. 3) won 6-0, 6-1 and Waddell (No. 2) won 6-1, 6-1 to give Huntingdon a 5-0 lead. Tabor (No. 4) and McBroom (No. 5) each won 8-1 for Huntingdon's final two wins.
