Hawks Volleyball Falls To #23 Covenant, Sweeps Agnes Scott

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga.- On their final day of matches in Lookout Mountain, Huntingdon volleyball(6-13 overall, 2-1 CCS) fell to the #23 ranked Covenant Scots(6-9 overall, 1-1 CCS) 3-1, but recovered to sweep the Scotties of Agnes Scott College(1-5 overall, 0-1 CCS) 3-0.

Game one vs Covenant

In their opening match of the day, Covenant managed to defeat Huntingdon 25-17. The Scots came out of the gates hot, taking a 8-3 lead as the set began. Going down by as much as 19-9, the Hawks surged late, with Lindsey Holland and Morgan Suggs earning kills, but taking advantage of their 13 kills in the sets, Covenant walked away victorious.

Battling back, the Hawks claimed the second set 26-24. Led by Izzy Valldeperas, the Hawks got out to an early 4-2 lead, taking advantage of Covenant errors and aces from Jessi Hilyer to push their lead to as much as 13-5. Trailing Huntingdon 22-12, the Scots opened up a 10-0 run to cut the deficit to 23-22, but kills from Izzy Valldeperas and Lindsey Holland were enough to close the set and even the match 1-1.

Not to be outdone, Covenant claimed the third set 25-6. The Scots led early, going ahead 9-5. Pushing their lead to 14-6, the Scots strung together a massive 11-0 run, closing the set and going ahead 2-1.

To take the match, the Scots defeated Huntingdon in the fourth set 25-15. Taking advantage of eleven Huntingdon errors, Covenant claimed a lead and never looked back, earning 9 kills on 35 attempts to take the 3-1 victory.

 

Game two vs Agnes Scott

Looking to bounce back from their first match loss, taking down the Scotties 25-9 in the first set. Following kills from Aly Harris and Lindsey Holland with an ace from Lydia Hitchcock, the Hawks lead early 5-1. Leading 10-7, an Ashlen Janowski kill sparked a 10-0 run for the Hawks, putting Huntingdon ahead 20-7 in the final stages of the set. A kill from Izzy Valldeperas put a stamp on the set, giving Huntingdon the 1-0 advantage.

Building off their momentum from the first set, Huntingdon also claimed the second set, this time by a score of 25-16. Kills from Aly Harris and Izzy Valldeperas put Huntingdon ahead 3-0 early, but the Scotties answered with three consecutive points of their own to even the score. The two teams traded points on the next serves, with the Hawks holding a slight 10-6 lead midway. A kill from Morgan Suggs sparked a 5-0 Huntingdon run later on, giving Huntingdon a 15-7 lead later in the set that they would hold throughout, with Lily VanDyke spiking one over the net to give Huntingdon the 2-0 lead.

To close the match, the Hawks took a 25-8 victory in the third set. Taking advantage of multiple Agnes Scott errors, the Hawks looked at a 5-1 lead early. An ace from Jenna Crow kicked off a 5-0 Huntingdon run, featuring kills from Sara Cochran and Ashlen Janowski to push Huntingdon's lead to 10-1. To bring an end to the set, several different Hawks, including Sara Cochran, Izzy Valldeperas, Morgan Suggs, and Ashlen Janowski, earned kills to claim their 3-0 victory.

The Hawks return to action on October 5th, traveling to face Maryville at Wesleyan College. Gametime is scheduled for 2:00 PM CT.
