Hitt and Hunt earn USA South Athlete of the Week honors

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Two Huntingdon student-athletes were named Athletes of the Week by the USA South Athletic Conference on Monday. 

Sam Hitt was named Defensive Player of the Week for men's lacrosse and Madison Hunt was named Pitcher of the Week for softball. This is the second straight week the two have earned the honors.

Hitt, a senior from Finksburg, Md., was recognized for his performance in an 11-6 win over Hendrix. He was 17-for-20 on faceoffs, picked up 14 ground balls and scored two goals as the Hawks earned their sixth win in eight meetings with the Warriors.

Through three games this season, Hitt leads Division III with 45 ground balls and is second with 63 faceoffs won. For players who have taken at least 80 faceoff attempts, he is second in Division III with a 70.8 faceoff winning percentage (63-for-89).  He has also scored five goals in nine shots taken this season.

Hunt, a junior from Crossville, Ala., was recognized for her performance in complete-game wins over the University of Dallas and Mount St. Joseph. In a 6-0 win over Dallas, Hunt struck out six, scattered five hits and did not issue a walk in seven innings. In a 3-1 win over Mount St. Joseph, Hunt gave up eight hits, struck out three, walked two and allowed one unearned run in seven innings.

For the season, Hunt is 5-0 with a 0.61 ERA, 19 strikeouts and four walks in 34 2/3 innings. She leads USA South pitchers and is tied for second in Division III with five wins, her four complete games lead the USA South and she is second in the conference and 10th in Division III with 19 strikeouts.

Her 0.61 ERA leads Division III pitchers who have thrown at least 27 innings this season and her two complete-game shutouts are tied for second in Division III.
