Men's Golf Preseason Report

Montgomery, Ala.-Huntingdon Men's Golf had a successful Fall season, including a tournament victory, and is ready to continue the success into the Spring season. The Hawks come into the Spring season ranked 4th in the Bushnell/Golfweek Division III Coaches Poll.

"Most championships are won by teams with great chemistry. Golf is no different. We are an individual sport in a team atmosphere," Head Coach Dave Schreyer said. "The 'team' component is the key to bringing home the title."

Players to Watch

"I feel Grant Gronka and Ethan Unverzagt are the key to the success of our program in the spring," Schreyer said. "They both have elevated their games over the last year and I feel this is their time to prove to themselves and  others they are the next Huntingdon greats."

At the NCAA DIII Fall Preview, Unverzagt finished tied for 2nd overall.

"Our returning seniors are ready to enter the spring determined to snatch that title that has eluded them the last 3 years," Schreyer said. "The boys have worked hard in the offseason and their spirits are high. It should once again be a fun spring. "

Expectations

"I never have expectations for my teams. I want them to work at a high level," Schreyer said. "I want them to feel prepared. Golf is a sport that can never be figured out. All you can do is put in the time and do your best to be prepared. We will fight when we get there, and we will leave everything on the course."

The Hawks will play 4 events in the spring season, including hosting the Wynlakes Invitational on March 28th and 29th. The Hawks will host #1 Methodist, #9 Greensboro, #16 Whitworth, #17 Piedmont, #18 Mary Hardin-Baylor, and  #24 Hampden-Sydney. In addition to hosting the 6 ranked teams, the Hawks will face tough competition all season long at the Savannah Harbor Invitational, Jekyll Island Invitational, and the Division III Showcase. Post-season begins with the USA South Conference Championship in Spartanburg, South Carolina, on April 18-20.

"I feel  we are a top 2 contender for the Conference Championship and a top 5 contender for the NCAA  Championship," Schreyer said. "On paper we are good enough to win both, but it will take our best effort. "

In the Fall season, the Hawks won the Rhodes Fall Tournament,  finished 3rd at the Division III Fall Preview, tied for 6th at the Tartan Invitational, and tied for 6th at the Golfweek Invitational.

"I am very proud of my boys. They certainly dig it out of the dirt every day," Schreyer said. "There is a lot to be said for perseverance and the will to win. These young men lay it on the line every day and it is a true pleasure to coach them."

The Hawks start their season at the Savannah Harbor Invitational in Savannah, Georgia, on March 7th and 8th. For the full schedule and roster information, visit https://www.huntingdonhawks.com/sports/mgolf/index
