Huntingdon baseball sweeps Oglethorpe in Sunday doubleheader

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon baseball team bounced back from a two-run loss to Oglethorpe on Saturday and swept the Stormy Petrels in a doubleheader at Posey Field on Sunday.

The Hawks (3-3) took the first game 10-0 in seven innings and won the second game 10-1. Huntingdon lost the first game of the series 7-5.

Pitchers Jackson Cruce and Gavin Free earned the wins. Cruce (1-0) pitched a complete-game shutout, scattering five hits, striking out three and walking one in seven innings. Free (1-1) threw a two-hitter, struck out seven, walked three and allowed one earned run before Dalton Dalrymple struck out two and allowed two hits in the final two innings.

Junior Jordan Freeman and freshman Will Pharis led the Hawks at the plate in the two games. Freeman was 4-for-6 with four RBIs and three runs and Pharis was 4-for-8 with four RBIs and three runs.

In Game 1, Freeman, Pharis and Victor Taylor each drove in two runs and Pharis scored twice. Free had two hits, a RBI and a run and Trammell DeJarnett had two hits and a RBI. Cheston Wesson had two hits and a run, Tyler Blackwell drove in one run and scored three times and Gunnar Peters had two runs and two stolen bases.

In Game 2, Freeman was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs, Pharis was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run, Landon Sessions was 2-for-4 with a RBI and two runs and Blackwell drove in two runs. Wesson, DeJarnett and Peters each had a RBI and a run and Nathan Edwards and Taylor each scored once.

Huntingdon returns to action at home on Tuesday at 4 p.m. against 12th-ranked Millsaps. The Majors edged Huntingdon 5-3 in their first meeting this season.
