Hawks split with Centenary and Belhaven

DUE TO CURRENT COVID-19 RESTRICTIONS, ONLY HUNTINGDON STUDENTS ARE PERMITTED AT OUTDOOR ATHLETIC EVENTS

 

JACKSON, Miss.  – The Huntingdon baseball team lost to Centenary and beat Belhaven on Sunday.

 The Hawks fell to Centenary 10-2 before bouncing back to edge the Blazers 8-7.

Against Belhaven, Huntingdon scored five runs in the ninth inning and ended the game with a play at the plate.

In the top of the final inning, the Hawks faced four pitchers and took advantage of a bases-loaded walk, four players being hit by pitches (three with the bases loaded) and a passed ball with the bases loaded.

Trailing 6-3 in the top of the ninth inning, Andrew Knight drew a bases-loaded walk to score Jake Elrod. Elrod reached base to lead off the inning by being hit by a pitch. With the bases still loaded, Ryan Greene, Cullen Stafford and Nick Swisher were each hit by pitches. Cody Hollis scored when Greene was hit, Wes Powell scored to tie the game when Stafford was hit and Knight scored to give Huntingdon the lead when Swisher was hit. Greene scored the final run on a passed ball.

In the bottom of the ninth, Huntingdon recorded two outs before Belhaven put runners in scoring position with a single and a double. On the final play, Belhaven doubled to center field to drive in one run but Hollis made the throw home and Knight made the play at the plate to end the game.

Greene was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run in the game and Knight had two RBIs and a run. Elrod and Hollis each had two hits and two runs, Powell scored two runs and had an RBI and Stafford and Swisher each had one RBI.

Tucker Duke (1-0) earned the win in 4 2/3 innings of relief, striking out five, walking two and allowing seven hits and three runs.

In the loss to Centenary, Huntingdon only trailed 4-2 in the top of the seventh inning before Centenary pulled away with one run in the seventh and five runs in the eighth. Jacob Pitts and Colton Clark each scored one run and Elrod had one RBI. Colin Whibbs was 3-for-3 and Powell was 2-for-4.

Wallace Henry (0-1) took the loss in five innings.
