Eight-run 5th inning sparks Huntingdon against Piedmont

DEMOREST, Ga.  – The Huntingdon baseball team used a big fifth inning to take control in a 13-2 win over Piedmont on Saturday.

The game was the second of a three-game non-conference series. The Lions won the first game of the series 4-2 on Friday.

Huntingdon took a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning, highlighted by a one-run single by Wes Powell and a one-run triple by Colin Whibbs. Leading by three runs in the fifth, Huntingdon sent 12 batters to the plate and scored eight runs.

A one-run single by Dawson Kuba opened the inning's scoring before Powell was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Leading 5-0, Andrew Knight hit a one-run single, Cullen Stafford drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, Whibbs hit a two-run double and Hall Billings hit a one-run double to make it 10-0. Ryan Greene, who led off the inning, hit a one-run single to close the inning's scoring.

The Hawks added two final runs in the seventh inning.

Whibbs finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs, two runs, a triple and a double. Stafford had two RBIs, one run and two hits. Powell, Billings and Greene each scored two runs and had one RBI, Knight and Adams Bragg each had one RBI, one run and two hits, Kuba had one RBI and one run and Colton Clark scored one run.

Wallace Henry (1-3) earned the win in six innings. Henry and relievers Tucker Duke (2 2/3 inning pitched) and Ryan Smith (1/3 of an inning pitched) combined for six strikeouts, five walks, six hits and two runs.
