Huntingdon loses non-conference doubleheader with Covenant

MONTGOMERY, Ala.  – The Huntingdon baseball team wrapped up a non-conference series against Covenant with a doubleheader on Saturday.

After Game 1 was canceled due to weather, the Hawks lost both games on Saturday, falling 11-5 and 14-11. The final game went to 14 innings.

Colton Clark, Cullen Stafford and Dawson Kuba combined for 12 of Huntingdon's 21 hits in the doubleheader as well as seven RBIs, nine runs, four doubles and a home run.

Clark finished with five hits, four runs, two RBIs and three doubles, Stafford had three hits, a solo home run, four RBIs and two runs and Kuba had four hits, three runs, one RBI and one double.

In Game 1, Huntingdon carried a 2-1 lead into the fourth inning before Covenant scored three runs in the top of the fourth inning and six runs in the top of the fifth inning.

Clark had two hits and two runs, Kuba had two hits and one run, Stafford had two RBIs and one run and Colin Whibbs had two RBIs. Andrew Knight scored one run and Wes Powell had one RBI.

Carden Mellown (1-2) took the loss in Game 1 in 3 1/3 innings. In Game 2, Tucker Duke (2-2) took the loss in one inning of relief. In the final game, a game in which the Hawks used six pitchers, reliever Josh Stevens highlighted the effort with five strikeouts, one walk, two hits and no runs allowed in four innings of relief.

The two teams combined for 32 hits in the second game. Huntingdon led 5-2 and 8-3 early but Covenant tied the game 8-8 in the top of the seventh. Each team scored two runs in the eighth inning to make it 10-10.

After four scoreless innings, each team scored one run in the 13th inning before Covenant took the lead for good with a three-run home run in the top of the 14th inning.

Clark was 3-for-6 with two RBIs and two runs in the game, Stafford had two hits, two RBIs and a run and Kuba had two hits, two runs and an RBI. Adams Bragg had two RBIs and a run, Powell had one RBI and one run, Knight had two RBIs and Whibbs and Ryan Greene each scored two runs.
