Hawks Push Past MUW in Season Opener

Montgomery, Alabama – In their season opener, the Hawks defeated Mississippi University for Women 15-2.

In his first at bat, Daniel Phillips hit a single to get on base. Next in the lineup, Dawson Kuba followed suit to hit a single and bat in Phillips for the Hawks first run of the night. With one out, the Hawks found a groove of getting on base with 8 hits for the first inning. Daniel Patton, Cade Morgan and Baron Brack all batted runners in to bring the score to 5-0. As MUW switched pitchers, Huntingdon began back at the start of their lineup where Kuba singled to bring in two more runners before the end of the inning (7-0).

The Hawks defense allowed no hits the second inning as Sam Thompkins, the Hawks starting pitcher led the way.  In their next at bat Christian Lasecki singled to bring in the lone runner of the 2nd inning (8-0). Both teams were scoreless throughout the 3rd inning and in the bottom of the fourth, N. Phillips scored off a single from Morgan (9-0).

MUW was finally able to make their way on the board in the top of the 5th after a sacrifice fly to center field (9-1). The Hawks answered in the bottom of the fifth with two of their own runs to push the lead further (11-1). The Owls would only be able to score one more run in the sixth and the Hawks D. Phillips solidified the game with a homerun that brought in three batters (15-2) to close out the game in seven innings.

Sam Thompkins earned his first collegiate win for the Hawks from the circle pitching 5 innings and allowing one hit. Leading the offense was left fielder D. Phillips as he went 3 of 5 on the night scoring three runs and bringing in three base runners.

The Hawks return to action tomorrow in the Firehouse Classic as they take on Rhodes College at 3:30 PM CST.
