Hawks Baseball Splits with Edgewood and MUW

Montgomery, Alabama – The Hawks (10-4 overall), fell to Edgewood and defeated Mississippi University for Women in their doubleheader.

Game One: Edgewood 8 – Huntingdon 6 (10 innings)

Edgewood struck first with a one run single in the top of the third inning to take the lead before the Hawks struck back in the bottom of the third. Jabez Sampson singled to left field to get on base and stole second. Colin Whibbs hit a double to right field to score Sampson and tie the game at one run. Noah Phillips and Daniel Patton earned RBIs in the bottom of the third inning as well to give the Hawks the 3-1 lead.

Starting pitcher, Hall Billings stood strong in his seven innings pitched. He only gave up three runs on seven hits against 33 batters. Billings shut out Edgewood in the fourth and fifth innings before they scored off a single in the top of the sixth to cut the Hawks lead to one (3-2).

Edgewood scored their final run off of Billings in the top of the eighth before he was relieved by Tucker Duke on the mound. Duke came in and struck out the last two batters to give the Hawks a chance to tie the game. The Hawks were unable to convert in the eighth as the game was tied at three heading into the ninth.

An Edgewood two run homerun lifted them back on top heading into the bottom of the ninth inning where the Hawks had to make a move. Now down by two, Whibbs reached on a fielder's choice and N. Phillips doubled to left field to push Whibbs to third for both of them to be in scoring position. After a change in pitching, Daniel Patton was walked to load the bases and Cade Morgan walked as well to score Whibbs on third. The Hawks now down by one as designated hitter Matthew Robinson stepped up to the plate with two outs. Robinson took one for the team as he was hit by a pitch to score N. Phillips and tie the game to send it to a tenth inning.

Edgewood scored a two run single and one run double in the top of the tenth to take the lead again at 8-5. Huntingdon was only able to score one more run off a sacrifice fly from Whibbs to score Sampson as the Hawks fell to Edgewood.

Game Two: Huntingdon 12 – MUW 10

The Owls of MUW scored first after reaching base on an error in the bottom of the third before the Hawks took their turn at the plate. Daniel Phillips singled to left field and Colin Whibbs and Daniel Patton walked to load the bases. A wild MUW pitch scored D. Phillips and advanced Whibbs and Patton as Cade Morgan came to the plate. Morgan singled to left field to score Whibbs and Patton advanced home to put the Hawks on top at 3-1.

The fourth inning claimed big for both teams as the Owls posted six runs on three hits off starting pitcher Michael Driver. Huntingdon found a way to out do MUW while scoring nine runs of their own on three hits in the bottom of the fourth (12-7).

Seth Killam replaced Driver on the mound and two hits followed by a two-run homerun from the Owls in the sixth cut the lead to only two (12-10).

Sam Tompkins came in for relief of Killam to close out the last six outs and secure the win for the Hawks.
