Baseball Defeats Oglethorpe on the Road

Brookhaven, Georgia – The Hawks (11-7 overall, 2-2 CCS), defeated Oglethorpe University (4-17 overall) 12-3.

The Hawks started off strong in the first inning beginning with a double from lead off batter, Daniel Phillips. Jabez Sampson got on with a walk and both runners advanced on an error from Oglethorpe. With D. Phillips and Sampson on third and second base, Colin Whibbs reached on an error and D. Phillips scored the Hawks first run. Daniel Patton and John Hale added RBI singles for the Hawks and Cade Morgan scored Whibbs for an early 4-0 lead in the first. The Petrels were only able to add one run to the board at the end of the first with Noah Phillips on the mound for Huntingdon.

Oglethorpe scored one more run in the bottom of the third off starting pitcher N. Phillips before being relieved by Hall Billings who closed out the third and fourth inning.

Next on the mound for the Hawks was Seth Killam. Killam allowed no hits or runs with two strikeouts before being replaced by Parker Szush in the seventh inning after the Hawks scored two runs to increase their lead.

To begin the seventh, Whibbs tripled to create momentum for the Hawks. His triple was followed by an Innes Mackay single to right field to score Whibbs. With bases loaded Hale hit an RBI single to score Mackay (6-2).

Huntingdon's scoring continued in the top of the eighth after three singles and Mackay and Patton earning their second RBIs of the night (8-2). The final run of the eighth came from an Oglethorpe wild pitch to score Mackay as the Hawks went up by seven runs.

A two-run homerun by Jordan Raley sparked the Hawks in the top of the ninth inning (10-2). Another Mackay single scored Huntingdon's final run of the night as D. Phillips crossed the plate (12-2).

Szush closed out the seventh and eighth inning while only allowing one hit and no runs for the Petrels. Tucker Duke subbed in to close out the game on the mound as he got the first two batters out and allowed one more run for the Petrels in the bottom of the ninth (12-3).

The Hawks return to action this weekend at Neal Posey Field against conference opponent, Berea College on Saturday March 25th at 12:00 PM and 3:00 PM CST and Sunday March 26th at 1:00 PM CST.
