Baseball Takes Down Berea

Montgomery, Alabama – The Hawks (13-8 overall, 2-3 CCS) defeated Berea College (5-19 overall, 1-5 CCS) with a final score of 9-8.

After a few weather delays, the Hawks bats started strong when Daniel Phillips and Baron Brack singled to get on base. Colin Whibbs hit a sacrifice fly to score D. Phillips for the Hawks early 1-0 lead. Brack crossed the plate after Hall Billings grounded out to the short stop and Michael Driver headed to the mound for the Hawks, up 2-0.

Driver shut out the Mountaineers across the first four innings, giving Huntingdon more opportunities at the plate with little pressure. In the third and fourth innings, the Hawks flew by the plate two more times to shoot up 4-0.

The Mountaineers found their way to the board with one run scored in the top of the fifth inning, but the Hawks answered in the bottom of the fifth after Whibbs was hit by a pitch and Cade Morgan brought him in off of a single (5-1).

Another run in the sixth for Berea led to two runs for the Hawks. Seth Killam knocked one over the right field fence and Whibbs hit his second sacrifice fly to push the lead to 7-2. Killam followed his solo homerun with an RBI in the seventh inning for the Hawks last run of the game (9-2).

Berea refused to go away, with three pitching changes for the Hawks, the Mountaineers scored five runs off of two hits to bring the game within two runs in the eighth inning (9-7).

Eddie Patterson took the mound for the Hawks in the ninth inning to close out the game as he allowed one more run for Berea before getting the final out.
