Hawks Sweep MUW

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Huntingdon (19-8 overall, 5-3 CCS) defeated Mississippi University for Women (2-18 overall) in today's non-conference doubleheader.

Game One : Huntingdon 3 – MUW 2

Parker Szush pitched his first complete game, earning his second win on the mound for the Hawks this season. In the scheduled seven innings, it was the Owls who hopped out first with the 1-0 lead after a sacrifice fly in the top of the first inning.

In the bottom of the second, Huntingdon answered with a pair of runs to take the lead. Matthew Robinson led off the inning with a solo homerun to tie the game at one. Cade Morgan was walked after Robinson's bomb to right field and Hall Billings singled to put two Hawks on base. Billings stole second and Morgan stole home to gain one more run for the Hawks (2-1).

Two hits in the third inning for the Owls led to the tying run being scored (2-2). Huntingdon and the Owls of MUW stood at two until a forced eighth inning came around. Szush held off MUW in the extra inning and the Hawks took the plate for the final time. Jabez Sampson singled with one out and found his way to third base after stealing second and advancing to third before Colin Whibbs came to the plate. Whibbs walked with the final ball being a wild pitch that enticed Sampson to steal home and win the game by one run.

Game Two : Huntingdon 10 – MUW 2

The Owls once again found their way on the board first with Michael Driver on the mound for the Hawks. Scoring off an error, Huntingdon was unable to answer until the fourth inning.

Daniel Patton doubled to right field to bring pinch hitter, Innes Mackay to the plate. Mackay singled to left and advanced Patton to scoring position as Dawson Kuba brought him in (1-1). The Owls called for a new pitcher and John Hale doubled to right field to bring in the leading run. The Hawks three run inning ended after a single from Daniel Phillips who scored Hale (3-1).

MUW tried to break ground in the top of the fifth with a sacrifice fly to score a run (3-2). However, the Hawks seven run inning shut down the Owls hopes of a comeback. With the bases loaded after a double, walk, and hit by pitch, Mackay was walked to advance all runners and start the scoring mania. Two more walks and a wild pitch by the Owls left the score at 7-2 before Colin Whibbs hit a three run double to left field, securing the eight-run lead (10-2).

In the final two innings with Seth Killam on the mound, MUW scored no runs and Killam earned his fourth win this season.

The Hawks return to action for a conference matchup against Belhaven University in Jackson, Mississippi, on Friday April 14th, the doubleheader is set to begin at 4:00 PM CT.
