Hawks Drop Series Opener Against LaGrange

MONTGOMERY,Ala.- To open their final regular season conference series, Huntingdon baseball(16-17 overall, 7-9 CCS) fell to the Panthers of LaGrange College(21-14 overall, 9-7 CCS) 7-4. The Panthers put together a third inning consisting of four runs to quickly grow their lead and eventually take the victory.

Highlights

  • The first run of the game came in the top of the 2nd inning with the Panthers earning a run to take a 1-0 lead
  • After holding the Hawks scoreless through two innings, LaGrange scored four runs to kick off the third inning and extend their advantage to 5-0
  • The Hawks began to battle back in the bottom of the third, with Davis Johnson bringing in their first run of the night off a Daniel Phillips flyout
  • Cade Morgan followed Phillips with a single that brought home Dylan Hyder to cut the deficit to 5-2
  • Still fighting, Christian Lasecki crossed home plate to put the Hawks behind 5-3 going into the fourth inning
  • With each squad's defense controlling the field over the course of the next three innings, the Panthers broke the ice with a run in the top of the seventh inning to bring their lead to 6-3
  • The Hawks responded in the eighth inning, with a single RBI from Matthew Robinson securing a run for Noah Phillips, bringing the score to 6-4
  • To close the game, LaGrange brought in their eighth and final run off a wild pitch, walking away with a 7-4 victory.

On the mound

  • Jacob McFarling drew the start for Huntingdon, allowing five runs on six hits while striking out three Panthers in five innings
  • Gavin Gomez relieved McFarling in the sixth inning, allowing two runs on three hits and throwing two strikeouts in a little over three innings
  • Caleb Griffis closed the game for the Hawks, keeping the Panthers off the board.

The Hawks return to Neal Posey Field tomorrow, May 3rd, for game two beginning at 3:00 PM CT.
