Hawks Take Down Southern Virginia

Buena Vista, VA.-The Huntingdon Football Team defeated Southern Virginia, 48-20. The Hawks are now 3-2 overall and 3-0 in conference.

The Hawks opened scoring at the 8 minute mark of the first quarter with Landon Cotney rushing 30 yards for a touchdown. Southern Virginia answered 4 minutes later with a 4 yard touchdown rush, tying the game at 7. A safety gave the Hawks the lead, 9-7 into the second quarter.

Will Edwards kicked a 23-yard field goal, making the lead 12-7 at 13:52 in the second quarter. Kahari McReynolds completed a 9 yard touchdown run just two minutes later. With 6 minutes to go in the half, Cotney rushed 9 yards for his second rushing touchdown of the game, making it 25-7. Cotney found Turner Wolfe with 15 seconds left in the half, adding to the lead and making it 32-7.

Southern Virginia completed a 2-yard touchdown run and a 2-point conversion, making the score 32-13. With 5 minutes left in the third quarter, Cotney completed a 5-yard run. 

The Hawks added to the lead again at the start of the fourth quarter, with McReynolds completing an 8-yard rush. Southern Virginia scored on a 6-yard pass, making the score 46-20. Another safety gave Huntingdon the lead, 48-20.

Cotney was 7-9 with 163 passing yards and 53 rushing yards. McReynolds had 20 carries for 137 yards and 2 touchdowns.

"We're happy to get a win and pretty happy with the way we played," Head Coach Mike Turk said. "We still have a lot of things that we need to clean up, but we did get to play some guys that haven't played a lot so far, and that is a blessing. It was a tough week preparation wise, so all in all, pleased with how we handled everything."

The Hawks are back in action on Saturday, October 16, when they take on Averett for Homecoming. Kickoff is set for 1 PM CST.
