Hawks Beat Averett on Homecoming

Montgomery, Ala.-The Huntingdon Football Team defeated Averett, 30-25, improving to 4-0 in conference.

An 11-play drive for the Hawks in the 1st quarter resulted in a 34-yard field goal by Will Edwards

At 7:40 in the 2nd quarter, Averett connected on an 11-yard pass for the touchdown, taking the lead 7-3. With 53 seconds left in the first half, quarterback Landon Cotney found Zach Self on a 6-yard pass, giving the Hawks a 10-7 lead.

At 5:02 in the 3rd quarter, Kahari McReynolds completed a 2-yard rush for a touchdown at the end of an 8-play drive. Just 1 minute later, Averett answered back with a 33-yard touchdown pass, making it 17-13.

With 1 minute remaining in the 3rd quarter, Cotney rushed 37 yards for a touchdown. 

At 12:17 in the 4th quarter, Averett completed a 3-yard rush but a failed 2-point conversion attempt made it 24-19. Just 2 minutes later, Averett completed an 82-yard run for a touchdown. Again, the Cougars went for the 2-point conversion and were unsuccessful, making it 25-24, Averett with the lead.

At 6:38, Landon Cotney completed a 6-yard rush for a touchdown to secure the Hawks win, 30-25 after a 2-point conversion attempt failed.

Cotney was 16-22 with 223 yards, 1 touchdown, and 128 rushing yards. Kahari McReynolds had 13 carries and 32 yards. Malachi Harvey had 7 catches for 134 yards. Ty Martinez led the defense with 4 solo tackles while Casey Peppers had 8 tackle assists. 

"We treat every game like it's the conference championship," Ty Martinez said. "We have everyone preparing like it's their last game."

"It was a very hard-fought win," Head Coach Mike Turk said. "I'm really excited for our boys. They played really hard and beat a really good football team."

The Hawks travel to Greensboro on October 23rd. Kickoff is set for 11:00 AM CST.
